[Class 17 (ii)] A marginal portion, at least, of the upper, or of a strip of material secured around the whole or a portion of the periphery of an insole is composed of material comprising threads which are readily soluble in an organic solvent to form a cement, to secure the upper and insole in lasted position. In one form, shown in Fig. 1, the lining 14 and preferably also the doubler 12, if one is used, is composed of fabric at least part of the threads 18 of which are of a material readily soluble in a suitable organic solvent, such as cellulose ester, or ether. After assembly and pulling over, solvent is applied to the margin of the lining and doubler, and, while the cement is still soft, the upper is lasted at the sides, as by a machine as disclosed in Specification 294,640, [Class 17 (i)], driving staples in the manner disclosed in Specification 354,787. The toe and heel portions of the upper may be lasted in a bed-lasting machine operated to wipe the upper in over the insole, the wipers then being withdrawn and the layers of upper material trimmed and opened and the solvent applied, the wipers being again operated. Heel and toe binders held by clamping members may be employed to hold the upper in position during setting of the cement. Alternatively, the lining and doubler may be formed of cotton or other relatively insoluble fabric, and the lining, doubling, and outer layer of the upper may have strips of soluble fabric secured to their marginal portions extending around the whole of the periphery or from heel breast line to heel breast line around the toe. Similarly, a strip of fabric 86, Fig. 13, from which cement is to be formed may be secured to an insole around the whole or a part of its periphery. Such strip may be attached by applying solvent at spots 88 around the periphery, or by pyroxylin or other cement. Specifications 338,558, [Class 17 (ii)], and 419,531 also are referred to.
