Abstract

615,942. Back rests; furniture combinations. ROBBINS, D. A. June 24, 1947, No. 23473/46. [Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iii)] A back rest for beach use or other purposes comprises a rectangular member or members fitted with hinged rearwardly directed side members of triangular form adapted to contact the ground and support the rectangular back member or members at the required inclination. As shown three rectangular members are hinged together and in use the member 8 is turned under so as to rest upon the ground by means of feet 16 while the member 1 forms an inclined rest for the occupant's back, the member 2 being disposed in prolongation thereof by means of bolts 4 and eyes 7 or turned down to meet the rear edge of the member 8 to which it may be secured by bolts operating in slots 24 and engaging sockets 25. Triangular side members 10, 12, hinged to the members 1, 8, when turned to positions at right angles to their respective members serve as supports for the back rest and may be secured in position by bolts operating in slots 14 engaging sockets 15. A U-shaped member 17 is slidable with respect to member 8 and serves as a sprag. The device may be folded up to serve as a container with the member 17 acting as a handle as shown in Fig. 6 and this container when turned upon the member 12 to serve as a base is usable as a seat. An apron 21 may be provided.
