Abstract
615,093. Root-crop topping machines. DUNCAN, J. Aug. 26, 1946, No. 25379. [Class 6 (iii)] A machine for cutting the haulms of root crops incorporates a shaw cutter and a shaw gripping device and a pair of forwardly extending prongs to guide shaws to the grippers, the latter comprising a rotatable toothed disc arranged in front of and above said cutter, and a non-rotatable spring- urged curved plate surrounding the rear edge of the toothed disc. The cutter unit comprises a disc 8, arranged between a fixed plate 12 and forwardly extending splayed prongs 13 which are on the plate 12, mounted on a sleeve 9 having a slot 10 in which a pin 11 on a spindle 4 slides. The spindle drives the cutter disc and may be driven from the land wheels or direct from the tractor. The cutter unit is raised by a lever 18 and chain 17 attached to the plate 12 which also has attached thereto a bracket 14 with a roller engaging in a guide. A counterweight 19 is provided. A spindle 21 carries the toothed disc 22 which is surrounded at the rear by a curved plate, the haulms being gripped between them and as the machine travels forwardly the haulms are cut by the disc 8 and then pass out of the curved plate. The Provisional Specification describes a modification wherein a second gripping device is provided for extra long shaws.
