733,043. Root-crop harvesters. RICHARDSON, G. W., BRIERLEY, T., and COURTLEY, A. Aug. 4, 1953 [May 7, 1952], No. 21385/53. Divided out of 732; 974. Class 6 (3). A root-crop topping machine comprises two inclined discs C which engage the plants and position a fixed cutter C<SP>1</SP> so that the tops are severed and two endless belts B, B<SP>1</SP> which grip and transport the tops after severing. The belts are guided by pulleys b<SP>3</SP>, b4 and b<SP>5</SP>, the pulleys b<SP>3</SP> being driven by bevel gearing b, a<SP>9</SP> from a transverse shaft a<SP>5</SP> which also drives a land wheel A<SP>4</SP> and is itself driven from a tractor rear wheel A<SP>2</SP>, the machine being connected to the tractor by a member A<SP>1</SP>. The front pulleys b<SP>4</SP> are mounted on members which are joined by a spring b<SP>8</SP> and are vertically adjustable by a handle c<SP>1</SP> each member carrying a pointed guide arm b<SP>9</SP>. The guides b<SP>9</SP> engage the tops or foliage on each side of a row and move the belts B, B<SP>1</SP> and discs C transversely to enable the adjacent portions of the peripheries of the discs to engage and ride up over the plants.
