627,358. Transplanting-machines. TAPP, E. T. J. May 30, 1947, No. 14450. [Class 6(i)] A transplanting-machine comprises a belt 24 encircling pulleys 23, 25, 26, one of which is disposed adjacent to the ground, the belt being provided with tongs 35, which open to receive plants as the belt flexes over an upper pulley 25 and open again to release the plants as the belt flexes over the lower pulley 23. Operators on seats 13 place the plants in cups on an endless belt 14 running transversely across the machine. The cups are arranged in pairs 18, 19 with a space 20 between them. The bent ends 36 of the tongs 35 enter each of the spaces 20 as the belt 14 passes over one of its supporting pulleys 15 to grip a plant and carry it downwardly. To ensure synchronism between the motions of the tongs 35 and the cups 18, 19, the planting belt 24 carries pins 37 which engage similar pins 21 on the feeding belt 14 and drive the latter in step-by-step relation. Alternatively, a Maltese-cross mechanism may be employed. To prevent the tongs being opened in passing over the intermediate pulley 26, the latter is flanked by discs 38 against which the pins 37 lie in passing around the pulley, the intervening portions of the belt 24 being straight. Alternatively, the pulley 26 may be polygonal. The tongs open as the belt flexes around the pulley 23 and the seedlings fall into a furrow formed by an elongated shoe 30, consolidation being effected by a pair of inclined presser wheels 32. A single land wheel 12 drives the belt 24. Specification 627,325 is referred to.
