The beet-digger described in Specification 621,987 is improved by the provision of intermediate guide plates 24 between the digging tools 12 and the rotary spinner 14, and by incorporating with the spinner an oscillating feeding member 31 to feed the crop rearwardly to an elevator 53, 54, discharging on to an oscillating screen 57 at its upper end. The machine is towed by a tractor which drives the spinner and elevator through gearing. The guide plates 24 are approximately triangular and are carried by the tool-holding standards 10. The member 31 comprises a cylinder 30 eccentrically mounted on the spinner spindle 13 and carrying rods which extend obliquely to the edge of an opening 20 in the frame. Beets pass through the opening 20 and fall into a trough 40 through which runs a conveyer comprising endless chains 53 carrying cross-members 54. The upper chain-sprocket 51 incorporates a cam 61 actuating the shakerscreen 57 through a pivoted bell-crank 62. The spinner comprises two discs, each carrying a series of radiating rods 80. The upper disc 71 is fixed to the axle and the lower disc 72 is both rotatably and axially adjustable in relation to it. The upper disc carries tongues 85, 86, 87 of various lengths in sets along its periphery and, by rotation of the disc 72, any set of tongues may be engaged with grooved members 88 on the lower disc to set the rods 80 at various spacings both vertically and radially.
