Abstract
732,962. Root crop harvesting-machines. HARDY, F. H. July 23, 1952 [July 23, 1951], No. 17406/51. Class 6 (3). A harvester for lifting and cleaning sugar beet and other root crops comprises an openwork drum 13 rotatably mounted in a frame 10 and provided with a helical partition 18, one or more lifting shares 36 and a conveyer for receiving earth and roots from the share or shares, separating earth from the roots and discharging the roots into the drum. As shown the machine is towed by a tractor and the drum is rotated by the tractor power take-off shaft through shafts 27, 26 and chain and sprocket gearing 24. The forward end of the drum is closed by a fixed screen 28 leaving an opening through which the roots are fed by the conveyer which comprises four rollers mounted on shafts 30, 31, 32, 33. The rollers are provided with tines and are driven by chain and sprocket gearing so that the peripheral speed of the rollers increases progressively from shaft 30 to shaft 33. A trough 41 is provided to discharge beets from the drum to an endless belt conveyer or elevator 40. The machine may be used in conjunction with a machine for topping beet, for example, the machine disclosed in Specification 732,963.
