A planting machine comprising gripping devices 5 attached to a chain 7 is provided with a plant holder attached to each gripping device, the holder being formed with prongs 7, 8 directed obliquely upward the springs 8 acting as a stop for the roots of the plant. The foliage of a plant is held by the gripping device and the roots are supported by the holder. The plant may be in a soil block, the block being supported by the holder. Sprouted potatoes may be planted by the machine, the potatoes being carried solely by the holders.
