[Class 6 (iii)] The roots and the soil surrounding them are lifted as one body and, as the machine moves forward, pass rearwardly through the machine with the roots upright to a positioning device that adjusts the tops to a common level for engagement by the top cutter. The machine comprises side walls 1 carried by main wheels 2 and vertically adjustable front wheels 2A. A blade 4 projecting forwardly at the bottom of the side walls 1 lifts the roots and the soil and directs them on to a conveyer 8 formed by a pair of laterally spaced endless bands carrying transverse projections 9. Disc coulters 5 are arranged at the sides of the blade 4. A single belt 14 with transverse projections 15, arranged above the conveyer 8, engages the tops of the roots, and presses them downwards to a common level for engagement by a rotary cutter 27. The belt 14, which is arranged to converge towards the conveyer 8 is adjustable about a pivot 19. Further belts 21 are provided in the side members 1 to facilitate the movement of the soil and the roots. The topped roots pass on to a vibrating platform 34 to separate them from the soil. The belts are preferably positively driven.
