Abstract

486,314. Topping beetroots. CATCHPOLE, W. M. Dec. 1, 1936, No. 32990. [Class 6 (iii)] A beet-topping machine comprises a wheeled frame 1 carrying by means of parallel links 6, 7, 8, 9, a floating frame or track unit 10 comprising an endless track of wooden slats 11 mounted at their ends on endless chains 12 that pass round rollers or sprockets on the floating frame and one pair of which is driven through chain and sprocket gearing from one of the axles so that the track moves rearwardlv at the same rate as the machine moves forwardly : two disc cutters 17, 18 carried by vertical shafts adjustable in the floating frame cut off the tops of the beet just below the track, The track is provided with a central raised portion that engages the crown of each beet and positions the floating frame just before the knives engage the beet; the leaves are pushed to the sides of this raised portion which is provided with spikes 24 to hold each root against the thrust of the knives. To assist this holding action the speed of the track may be slightly greater than the speed of the machine. The track unit and the knives may be driven from the power shaft of a tractor or from a motor on the machine.
