Abstract
396,560. Lifting, gathering, and conveying crops &c. URSCHEL, W. E., 158, South Napoleon Street, Valparaiso, Indiana, U.S.A. Aug. 22, 1932, No. 23490. [Classes 6 (iii) and 58.] A device for gathering, raising, or conveying materials such as stalk or root crops, comprises a pair of generally parallel co-operating rotary units of which pair one unit at least consists of an assemblage of longitudinal bar-like members, each member having its ends oppositely cranked and being mounted for simultaneous planetary and individual rotational movement. The bars 1 are mounted in bearing blocks 2, 7 by extended bearing pins 3, cover plates 5, 8 being provided to protect the bearing surfaces. The bearing block 2 is keyed to a driving shaft 9 and the block 7 is rotatably mounted on a member 12 which in turn is pivotally secured to a spring-pressed support 14 that is adapted to yield should an excess of material be engaged by the device. The tension of the spring may be adjusted. The material is gripped between the device illustrated and a similar device in which the bearing blocks are driven in the reverse direction. The bars may be oval in transverse section. The device may be used for lifting root crops, pulling the head from the root or conveying the roots, such as beets, to cutting instrumentalities, or for harvesting cotton and like crops, the rotation of the blocks in this case being so directed that the stem of the plant is forced downwards, the mature bolls being left above the bars I. Indian-corn may be harvested in a similar way. The bars for harvesting Indian-corn may be smooth edged at their forward ends but provided with cutting edges at the rear so that the upper part of the stalk may be cut ready for binding; a separate cutting member may be attached to the bars. Instead of using two devices as illustrated to seize and carry the material one such device may be used co-operating with a pegged or a plain roller.
