Abstract

732,963. Root-crop topping machines. HARDY, F. H. July 23, 1952 [July 23, 1951], No. 17407/51. Class 6 (3). A machine for topping sugar beet comprises a power-driven endless band 14 mounted on a frame 10 which is yieldingly suspended on a plate 30 beneath a vehicle by suspension springs 26 and front and rear links 15A, 15B and 16A, 16B respectively and a knife 27 carried on the frame below the lower run of the endless band, the lower run of the band moving in a direction towards the knife. As shown the links 15A, 15B and 16A, 16B are attached to spindles 18 and 19 respectively which have upstanding levers 20, 21 respectively attached thereon. The levers 20, 21 are attached to a link 22 which is adjustable by means of a handle 23 to vary the angles made by the spaced pairs of links with the vertical. The endless band 14 is driven from the power take-off shaft of a towing tractor. Alternatively the endless band may be driven by chain and pinion gearing from a road wheel. The plate 30 may be disposed at an inclination to the direction of movement of the vehicle. The machine may be used in advance of a harvester as described in Specification 732,962.
