Abstract

710,657. Beet-harvesting. STANDEN & SONS, Ltd., F. A., and STANDEN, P. July 1, 1952 [Oct. 2, 1951], No. 22920/51. Class 6 (3) A beet-harvesting machine comprises a wheeled chassis 1, within which is mounted a verticallyadjustable sub-frame 6 carrying shares 7 and crop-elevating means (not shown), and a laterally offset topping unit adapted to operate on the adjacent crop-row. The elevating means, which deliver to a collecting vehicle, may be as shown in Specification 662,804, the frame 6 being hinged at its rear end to the chassis 1. The topping unit is carried by an arm 10, pivoted on the ground-wheel axle 3 outside the chassis 1 but within the span of the wheels 2, and comprises a set of coaxial feeler-discs 15 driven by a chain 17 from the axle 3, and a knife 25 carried by a holder 24 mounted in an adjustable bracket 23 on a member 12. The discs are serrated and are driven at a peripheral speed greater than that of the machine, and cleaning prongs 16 are interposed between them. The unit, which is adjustable along the axle 3, is suspended by a spring from a hand-lever on the main frame 1.
