A tractor-mounted beet-harvester comprises an assembly extending along one side of the tractor and consisting of a main frame 12 mounted on the back axle housing 8 of the tractor and floatingly supporting a sub-frame 21 carrying a spiked pick-up. wheel 29 and topping apparatus 47. The main frame is rectangular and comprises side-beams 13 joined by front and rear members 14, 15. The rear member 15 is integral with arms 16 secured to a crossshaft 11 journalled in brackets 9 on the axle casing 8. The front member is supported by a hydraulic jack 20 on the tractor chassis 2. The sub-frame 21 comprises side-beams 22 supporting the pickup wheel and secured to a crossshaft 24 at the rear. The crossshaft 24 is carried by bearings journalled on the tractor axle 6 and is connected to the main frame by a spring-loaded device 40 which permits resilient floating movement between the frames 12 and 21 but ensures the sub-frame being raised by the jack 20. The main frame carries twin-shares 34, and coulters 38 for cutting excess foliage. The beets are raised on the spikes 31 of the wheel 29 and are topped by the device 47 which comprises an idle cutting wheel co-acting with a driven cutter 50. An arm 58 rotating with the cutter 50 sweeps the topped beets into a lateral conveyer 54 which delivers them rearwardly to an elevator 62 discharging on to a truck alongside. The tops are retained on the spikes 31 from which they are stripped by a series of bars 65 to fall on to a transverse conveyer 68 for discharge on to the ground. The pick-up wheel, the topping-knife and the various conveyers are driven from the tractor axle 6 by belt and chain gearing.
