Abstract
1,058,191. Root-crop harvesters. J. D. DYSON and C. R. DYSON. Jan. 13, 1964 [Oct. 12, 1962], No. 38800/62. Heading A1F. A self-propelled beet-harvester is mounted on rear driving wheels 4, 5 and front steerable wheels 8, 9, and has topping and digging units 15, 30 laterally offset from the front wheels so that the latter do not pass over the undug crop. As shown in Fig. 1, the machine-frame comprises parallel longitudinal beams 1, 2 supporting a cross-member 7 on which the front wheel assembly is mounted so as to be pivotable about a longitudinal axis 6a. There is also an alternative position 8a, 9a for the frontwheel assembly. A stub shaft 16 pivotally supports an arm 18 carrying the driven feeler discs 21 which are followed by a stripper drum 22 and topping knife, the tops being carried away transversely by a conveyer 24. A leaf-clearing spinner (not shown) may be mounted between the topping unit and the digging unit 30 which comprises disc-coulters 34 followed by power-driven rotary digging discs 32, 33. A flail 38 throws the beet on to a transverse elevator 39 which is turned back on itself to discharge the crop, with the aid of a deflector 40, on to a longitudinal elevator discharging into a tank 43. The tank has an apron floor 44 feeding to a transverse elevator 45, 46, for discharging purposes. In the modification shown in the drawing accompanying the complete Specification two or more power-driven digging discs 101 feed crop to the horizontal run 102 of an elevator 103, with the aid of flails 105 which throw the crop against a vertical grid 106. A weighted chain 124 hangs against the upper run of the elevator 103, and, together with a chain conveyer 128, defines an area within which the beet is tumbled before passing over the upper run of the conveyer 128 to the elevator 138 which discharges into a tank 139.
