[Class 110 (iii)] In a gas turbine plant of the kind in which a turbine drives a compressor which supplies air to a combustion chamber delivering combustion gas to the turbine, the steam raised in a water jacket surrounding the combustion chamber being used in the turbine, the passage from the combustion chamber to the turbine is cooled by a steam jacket which receives steam from the water jacket and supplies it to the turbine. As applied to the propulsion of a motor vehicle, the turbine is arranged with its shaft 38 vertical and drives the centrifugal compressor 12 and a main output shaft through bevel gearing. Water is supplied to a cooling jacket 21 surrounding the combustion chambers 17, as through a pipe 22, and the steam generated passes by way of a pipe 23, non- return valve 25 and annular chamber 24 to an annular cooling jacket 30 surrounding the combustion gas conduit 28, and mingles at 31 with the gas before it enters the turbine. After the working fluid has passed once through the outer blade row 32 and the inner blade row 33 in succession, it is re-directed to repeat the action once or more times, suitable transfer conduits 36 being provided for this purpose. There may be a third blade row inside the others. On starting, the non-return valve 25 is closed, and a portion of the compressor output is bled directly to the annular chamber 24 for cooling purposes. Sparking-plugs 19 may be used to initiate combustion. In a modification, the steam is not mixed with the gas, but flows separately through the turbine and then passes to a condenser, the condensate being returned through pipe 22.
