Abstract
2-Alkyloxy- or alkenyloxy-5-nitro-anilines and salts thereof are prepared by the partial reduction of 2-alkyloxy or alkenyloxy-1 : 5-dinitrobenzenes in an aqueous suspension. The 2-alkyloxy- or alkenyloxy-5-nitro-aniline is separated from 4-alkyloxy- or alkenyloxy-3-nitro-aniline by making use of the difference in alkalinity of the said two substances, e.g. a salt of 4-alkyloxy or alkenyloxy-3-nitro-aniline is allowed to crystallise out in an acidic medium and then 2-alkyloxy- or alkenyloxy-5-nitro-aniline is obtained by increasing the pH to just over 3 and higher. In an example, a solution of sodium disulphide and sulphur in water is added to a boiling mixture of water and 2-propyloxy-1 : 5-dinitrobenzene, and the hydrochloride of 4-propyloxy-3-nitro-aniline crystallises out on the addition of hydrochloric acid and then 2-propyloxy-5-nitro-aniline is obtained by reducing the acidity with sodium hydroxide.
