Abstract
o-Sulphobenzoic acid is obtained by reaction of an o-halogenbenzoic acid with a salt of sulphurous acid in the presence of copper or a copper salt. Advantageously, the o-halogen-benzoic acid is dissolved in water and an alkali to form a solution very weakly alkaline or neutral to litmus, and the reagents are heated under pressure with stirring. In an example, an aqueous solution of o-chlorobenzoic acid, made very weakly alkaline with soda, is treated with an aqueous solution of sodium sulphate or of another sulphite containing a small proportion of copper sulphate and the whole is heated under pressure within 4 hours to 170-175 DEG C. and so maintained with stirring for 10 hours; the cooled product is extracted with hot water and the extract is made acid to Congo red by adding hydrochloric acid, and evaporated to isolate the product, after filtering off crystallisations of inorganic salts and unchanged chlorobenzoic acid.
