Abstract
Soluble derivatives of 4 : 41-diaminodiphenylsulphone which are of therapeutic value are obtained by reacting this substance with an alkyl aldehyde other than a hydroxy alkyl aldehyde or an alkyl aldehyde containing less than four carbon atoms, an aryl aldehyde or an unsaturated aralkyl aldehyde free from alkyl a -substituents in the presence of sulphurous acids or an aqueous solution of the bisulphite or metabisulphite of an alkali or an alkaline earth metal. The reactants may be mixed in the presence of water, or an aqueous-alcoholic solution containing the sulphone may be treated with sulphur dioxide. In examples, 4 : 41-diaminodiphenylsulphone is reacted with (1) cinnamic aldehyde and sulphurous acid; (2) calcium bisulphite and cinnamic aldehyde; (3) cinnamic acid and sulphurous acid; (4) the strontium salt is prepared from example 3; (5) cinnamic aldehyde and sodium metabisulphite; (6) sodium bisulphite and oenanthol; (7) sodium bisulphite and citral; (8) sodium metabisulphite and vanillin; (9) sodium bisulphite and vanillin; (10) sodium metabisulphite and piperonal; (11) sodium bisulphite and isovaleraldehyde; (12) sodium bisulphite and 2 : 4 - dimethoxybenzaldehyde.
