Abstract

Easily soluble therapeutic compounds are prepared by reacting a 2 - sulphanilamido-1 : 3 : 4-thiodiazole which is substituted in the 5-position by an alkyl or an aryl group, with ammonia or an aliphatic amine. The amount of ammonia or amine added is preferably such as to bring the pH of the resulting solution in the range 7.0-7.4. The concentration of the solution is preferably arranged such that the resulting solution is of about 4 per cent strength in which case it is suitable for application to the eye or to mucous membranes. If a more dilute solution than 4 per cent is used, an addition of neutral salts may be made to bring the total concentration of salts to the point where the solution is isotonic with body fluids. In examples: (1) To 2-sulphanilamido-5-methyl-1 : 3 : 4-thiodiazole (5.5 grams) is added aqueous ammonia to form a solution of pH 7.05. (2) Ammonia is added to the 5-ethyl compound to form a solution of pH 7.2-7.5. (3) Monoethanolamine is added to 2-sulphanilamido-5-methyl-1 : 3 : 4-thiodiazole to form a solution of pH 7.2-7.4. (4) Triethanolamine is added to 2 - sulphanilamido - 5 - methyl - 1 : 3 : 4-thiodiazole to form a solution of pH 7.2.
