Abstract

612,460. Lubricating. JOWETT CARS, Ltd., and PALMER, G. M. May 24, 1946, No. 15750. [Class 12 (iii)] An independent suspension system for a motor vehicle has a lubricating pump actuated by the oscillations between two members of the suspension system to force oil into or through the bearings, swivel pins and parts associated with the suspension. As shown, a double-arm parallel type suspension for each of the front wheels of a motor vehicle has a lower spring arm 1 of box section forming an oil reservoir 2 in which is mounted a pump casing 4 by means of an annular flange 5 held within a rubber seal 6 forming an oil-tight universal joint. The casing 4 has inlet ports 17 and carries a fixed plunger 7. A slidable pump body 8 with an axial bore 9 and inlet passage 18 has a ball end 11 held in a cup member 12 fixed to the stub axle carrier 13 by a screwed plug 14 having a lubricant passage 14a and a non-return valve 15. In operation, oscillations between the lower spring arm 1, and the stub axle carrier 13 cause oil to be delivered via passages 20 to bearing 16 in the carrier, swivel bearing 19 and stub axle.
