Abstract

733,953. Lubricating. HALL, E. W. April 28, 1954 [April 29, 1953], No. 11868/53. Class 12 (3). A device for oiling the axles of railway vehicles comprises a resilientlymounted skid 10 adapted to be downwardly displaceable by the axle 19 of a moving vehicle, an oil - containing trough 21 in the skid with a bowed resilient cover-plate 22 having one or more apertures, and a pump 25 operable by the downward displacement of the skid and adapted to deliver oil from an extraneous oil supply to the trough 21 and through the apertures in the cover-plate 22 to the axle. As shown, the pump has a cylinder 26 with an inlet port 32 connected to a pipe 36 leading to an oil-supply reservoir, and an outlet port 34 provided with a valve 35 and connected by a flexible pipe 24 to the trough 21. A piston 27 reciprocable in the cylinder 26 has a stem 28 pressed upwardly by a spring 30 and provided with an adjustable head 29 adapted for contact with the under surface of the skid 10. The piston 27 has a plug valve 33 which enters and closes the inlet port 32 when the skid is depressed, while oil trapped in the cylinder 26 is forced into the outlet port past the valve 35 for delivery to the trough 21. The oil may be supplied by gravity or by a pump to the inlet pipe 36 leading to the inlet port 32 of the pump 25.
