Class 12(3) A rail and flange lubricator of the type in which a film of grease is extruded from a housing by the action of a pump actuated by passage of the wheels of a railway vehicle, is characterized in that between the pumn and the source of supply of the grease under pressure to the pump there is provided means preventing return of the grease to the source during actuation of the pump and also means absorbing return or back-pressure on the grease from the pump towards said source. In the arrangement shown, a housing 1 is provided with a conduit 2, along which grease is forced to the pump under pressure, and with a passage 3 through which grease is forced by the pump to means for spreading the grease along the rail. The pump comprises a casting 4 provided with a plunger 10 the upper part of which is positioned to be engaged by the wheels of rail- 'way vehicles and the lower part of which forms a piston 12 in a cylinder 11. On the plunger being depressed the piston moves. rearwardly against the action of a spring 11a and forces grease past a ballvalve 13 into a channel which communicates with the passage 3. Between the housing 1 and the casting 4 is a block 5 formed with a compartment 17 fitted at one end with a spring-pressed valve 20, the other end communicating with the cylinder 11. Communicating with the compartment 17 is a lateral chamber 25 fitted with a spring 30 and piston 29. The valve 20 prevents return of grease through the conduit 2 during the movement of the pump. Any back pressure between the piston 12 and the grease above it is taken up by the piston 29 and spring 30. The pump may be of the type described in Specification 658,820, [Group XXVIII].
