Abstract

Class 103(1) A brake cylinder for vehicles incorporates an hydraulic intensifier unit which is operated pneumatically by compressed air or vacuum so that no hydraulic piping is necessary and the risk of liquid leakage is reduced. The compressed air or vacuum from the brake control valve acts against a piston 1 reciprocal in a cylinder 2 in communication with a hydraulic reservoir 9. In the rearmost position of the piston 1, liquid can flow from chamber 2a to chamber 6a in front of the reduced inner end of the piston through holes 7. When a brake application is initiated by air pressure at connection 27. The first movement of piston 1 cuts off holes 7 and the pressure of liquid in chamber 6a acts against the piston 14 of a slack adjusting unit. Movement of piston 14 compresses liquid in chamber 13a which passes through holes 19 and acts against the inner face of a piston 20 which bears against a power ram 22 acting on the brake blocks. The space 13a behind the piston 14 when this is in its left hand position, corresponds to the liquid displacement necessary to take up the normal brake shoe clearance. If piston 14 reaches the end of its travel before the clearance has been taken up, liquid can flow past the non- return valve 18. If on the return stroke the piston 14 should reach its endmost position before the piston 5 has uncovered ports 7, liquid may flow from chamber 2a to chamber 6a past a non-return valve 12 in the piston 5.
