Abstract

718,398. Rail and wheel flange lubricators. MILLS; Ltd., EXECUTORS of J. June 29, 1953 [April 2, 1952], No. 8355/52. Class 12(3) A rail and wheel flange lubricator comprises a unit 18, Fig. 2, supported on the railway bed and embodying a container 19 for lubricant and a reciprocating pump 39, the pump piston being connected to an actuating element 91 which is depressed by an operating element 96 when traffic passes over a rail 16, means being provided whereby the element 96 can be moved laterally clear of the element 91 to enable the pump 39 to be removed from the unit 18. The container 19 is closed at the bottom by a filter 20 through which lubricant is forced by a weighted piston .25 provided with means for attachment of a handle and with means for permitting air to pass below the piston. Lubricant is drawn into the pump 39 through the bottom as the pump is reciprocated. The actuating element 91 is depressed by an arm 96 in two parts connected pivotally by a bolt 102 so that the part 96B may be moved clear of the element 91. The part 96A is pivotally connected to a bracket 94 secured to the rail 16 and has a dependent lug 98 engaged by a spring 101 on a bolt 100, the arrangement being such that excessive downward movement of the rail 16 causes the operating arm 96 to pivot upwardly and avoid damage to the pump. The pump Fig. 4, is carried by a cap 42 which is screwthreaded in an attachment portion 40 secured to the top of a member 23. The pump barrel 43 has at the bottom a liner 47 integral with a valve seating 44 and forming a guide for a piston 48, which is hollow and has an opening 49 normally closed on a ball valve 50. The piston is connected by a rod 52 to an element 91 which projects through the cap 42 for engagement in the arm 96, whereupon the piston is displaced downwardly and lubricant between valves 45 and 50 is forced past the valve 50 and through apertures 51 into the pump barrel 43 and eventually out through passages 56 leading to rails and wheel flanges. Part of the lubricant may be bypassed back to the chamber 23 through a passage 57 adapted to be partly closed by a by-pass valve 58. The lubricant may be supplied through passage 56 to a rail lubricator, Fig. 5, comprising an L- shaped member 63 forming with the web 68 of the -rail and with end closure members a member 69. The member 63 is secured to the rail by means of spaced clips 71, each carrying a nut 75 engaged by a clamping screw 76. A flexible metal tongue 80 is secured to the member 63 to extend alongside the top part of the rail to form with the rail a chamber 82 connected by openings 83 to the chamber 69, lubricant being squeezed out as the flange of a wheel engages the tongue 80. In the case of a check rail, Fig. 8, a chamber 82 is formed between the rail and an angle member 64, lubricant supplied from the pump to this chamber being caused to pass over the top of the rail and out between the rail and the wheel flange 85. Several examples are given of means for ensuring that excessive movement of the'rail due to passage of a vehicle will not harm the pump, the excess movement being provided for by resilient means or by pivotal movement against frictional : resistances. Specifications 481,194, 622,424 and 699,723 are referred to.
