Abstract

519,312. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. NEWTON, N. B. Sept. 19, 1938, Nos. 27219/38 and 8765/39. [Class 108 (iii)] In a hydraulic shock absorber having a reservoir or recuperative chamber, a loaded automatic relief valve is provided in the upper part of the reservoir together with, a filling means for admitting fluid. As applied to a piston type shock absorber, a duct 11 leading from the upper end cap 10 is fitted with a standard grease nipple 13 and a spring-loaded non-return valve 14 through which fluid is supplied. An outlet valve unit 15 in the cap 10 has a non-return valve 16 through which surplus fluid passes to an outlet duct 17. A shock absorber of the rotary vane type or the opposed piston type may be similarly fitted. Fig. 6 shows a screwed plug 31 in which the two valves . are combined, a central stem part 32 having its lower end 33 pressed by a spring 34 to seat against the plug, arid being guided by a nut 35 in which are formed release holes 36. The upper end of the stem forms a nipple for a fluid supply connection, the fluid entering through a central bore 37 and past a spring- pressed valve 38.
