Abstract
370,190. Lubricating valves. LEACH, R. W., of Audley Engineering Co., Ltd., Newport, Shropshire. April 10, 1931, No. 10592. [Classes 12 (ii) and 12 (iii).] A plug cock has a lubricant reservoir f adj acent to one end of the plug d fitted with a piston g working in a cylindrical cavity in said end of the plug and subject to the pressure of the controlled fluid and the action of a spring j so as to exert pressure on the lubricant in said reservoir and channels m leading to the working surfaces, in excess of that of the controlled fluid. The latter has access to the cylindrical cavity through a hole h. When the cock is closed, a lateral hole y enables the controlled fluid to reach the main passage i, and the cylindrical cavity. A plate or cross-piece k secured to the outer end of the piston g forms one abutment for the spring j, the other being formed by the plug d itself as in the Figure, or by a plate resting on a shoulder in the casing a. Excess lubri-: cant may escape into the cock'when the holes u, v in the plug and piston respectively coincide. Stepped circumferential and longitudinal channels m completely surround the fluid passage. The former may be in the casing a and the latter in the plug d, or their positions may be reversed as in the Figure. An actuating stem n may be formed integrally with the plug d or separately as in the Figure. In the latter case, a tongue q on one member engages a slot r in the other. Alternatively an Oldham coupling member may be interposed between the plug and actuating spindle. Lubricant may be forced past a non-return valve p in the stem n by the screw o or forced into the reservoir f by a grease gun applied to a nipple containing a non-return valve shown at x. The reservoir f may be formed integrally with the casing a or by a cap e screwed thereto. Leakage past the stem n may be prevented by packing rings s as shown in the Figure, or by a screw connection. In a modification the lubricant reservior f is below the plug d which is in this case supported by an additional spring.
