Abstract

453,808. Vehicle suspensions. MAIER, F. E., 30, Sommeringstrasse, Charlottenburg. Berlin. Nov. 28, 1935, Nos. 33041 and 33042. Convention dates, Nov. 28, 1934 and Aug. 29, 1935. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] In a vehicle suspension, an upper member carried by the vehicle frame is slidable with respect to a lower hollow guide which is united with an axle bush so that the axes of the guide and bush cross but do not intersect. In one form, the axle bearing is integral with or secured to a cylinder 4. A cylinder 7 is carried by vehicle frame members 6 and houses a cylinder 5. To facilitate steering, the cylinder 5 is rotatable but not axially displaceable in the cylinder 7 and is guided in the cylinder 4 by a sleeve 24 which engages a slot 25. A helical spring 8 is arranged as shown and to facilitate shock-absorption the end of the cylinder 5 is provided with an apertured piston 16 which may co-operate with a tapered plug 30. The axes of the cylinders may be upwardly, inwardly and rearwardly inclined and may be disposed so that they intersect the road surface at the place of contact of the wheel tread. The cylinders 5, 7 may be mounted on ball joints carried by vehicle frame members and the brake drum may be situated on either side of the cylinders. A dust excluding gaiter 29 is provided. In a modification, the axle bush 2 is carried by a cylinder 4 in which is mounted a cylinder 37. A cylinder 7 is adjustably clamped to a vehicle frame member and carries a rotatable cylinder 5 splined to the cylinder 37 and provided with pistons 16, 17, the cylinder 5 is rotated for steering by an arm 14. A helical spring 8 and rubber buffers 53, 54 are provided. A tube 58 and non-return valve 57 facilitate lubrication and may be used for shock-absorption. Non-return valves 61 act to allow oil to return to the cylinder 4. A wheel may be carried on either side of the guide and the suspension may form part of an aircraft undercarriage.
