Abstract

624,970. Axle lubricating systems. KIRKSTALL FORGE, Ltd., and COWELL, F. R. July 18, 1947, No. 19273. [Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a vehicle axle comprising a casing 11 containing a differential gear 13 driven from bevel gearing 16, 17 from an input shaft 14, and having live axles 12 transmitting the drive to the road wheels, a reciprocating pump 20 is located within the casing 11 and driven from the input shaft 14 to feed oil to parts of the axle which would otherwise be insufficiently lubricated. The pump 20 has a plunger 22 reciprocated by an eccentric pin 21 on the shaft 14 carried in a rocking barrel 24, the movement of which opens the pump cylinder to the inlet and outlet ports 26, 27 respectively. From the pump oil is delivered to jets 30, 31 and 39 to lubricate the offside differential bearing 19, the differential gears and the front bearing of the bevel pinion 16.
