Abstract

634,522. Rail vehicle propulsion. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. July 4, 1947, No. 17670. Convention date, July 5, 1946. [Class 79 (ii)] In a combined rack-and-adhesion drive for rail vehicles, in which adhesion wheels 7 and a rack engaging pinion 3 are driven through gears by a common motor, and the pinion 3 and. a large gear wheel 8 which forms part of the drive for the wheels 7 are rotatably mounted on the wheel axle 1, the drive to the wheels 7 can be disengaged by a pressurefluid controlled coupling disposed in the gear wheel 8. As shown the wheel axle 1 rotatably carries the gear wheel 8 and a quill shaft 2 to which are secured the pinion 3 and a gear wheel 4. Coupling discs 9 are keyed to the axle 1 and are capable of axle movement therealong. The gear wheels 4, 8 mesh with pinions 6, 13 keyed to a countershaft 5 mounted in a gear casing 2a which is mounted in bearings la, 1b. The shaft 5 is driven from a motor (not shown) through an articulated shaft 17 and bevel gearing 15, 16. The drive from the motor is coupled to the adhesion wheels 7 when, as shown in the figure, the coupling discs 9 are in frictional contact with the inside of the gear wheel 8. The discs 9 are held in this position by the injection between them of pressurised oil from a pump (not shown) along a duct 18, an annular bore 12 in the bearing 1b and bores 11 in the axle 1.
