897,850. Differential gears and controls. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd., JOSEPH. Oct. 17, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959], No. 37233/59. Class 80 (2). In a differential gear for a wheeled or tracked vehicle, half shafts 6 connected to bevel side wheels 5 meshing planets 4 carried by an input crown wheel 3 respectively drive similar, variable-stroke, swash-plate pumps 8 arranged in a closed hydraulic circuit with the inlet of the one pump connected to the outlet of the other pump and vice versa, and means 9, not described, varies the strokes of the pumps to control differential movement of the road or track wheels 7. Equal pump strokes provide equal half shaft speeds; zero pump strokes provide normal differential action; and different pump strokes impose a positive differential movement on the half shafts to provide a steering effect which may be used merely to assist cornering, the means 9 in such case being conrolled by the normal vehicle steering mechanism, or, in a tracked vehicle, for steering.
