Abstract

812,923. Vehicle steering. CAM GEARS Ltd., and LEESE, H. Dec. 19. 1956 [Oct. 5, 1955], No. 28329/55. Class 79(5) In a rack and pinion steering mechanism having the tie rods to the steered wheels connected to the ends of the rack the pinion on the steering wheel column is engaged with the rack through the intermediary of a gear train whereby the velocity ratio between the steering wheel and the rack is increased. As shown the steering shaft 14 is supported in a casing 11 integral with the rack housing 12, the shaft 14 being urged against a cover 13 by a spring 18. An pinion 19 on the shaft 14 meshes with a gear 20 on a shaft 21 which carries a gear 24 meshing with the rack 26, the gears 20, 24 being either integral with or splined to the shaft 21. The rack 26 is urged into engagement with the gear 24 by a spring disposed between a slipper and a cover plate 29. The gearing between the shaft 14 and the gear 24 may alternatively be worm and worm wheel or other form of gearing.
