[Also in Group XXXI] In a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism the rack is urged towards the pinion by a block of rubber or other resilient material. A rack 1 is connected at its ends by universal joints to transmission arms 5 which are connected to the wheel-moving members or to linkages for moving the wheels and co-operates with a pinion 7 fast on a shaft 8 connected to the steering column. A block 11 of rubber or other resilient material urges the rack into contact with the pinion. The rack moves within a housing tube 3 provided at its ends with resilient sealing members 4. A port 13 in the housing tube 3 allows relief of lubricant pressure within the housing during use.
