780,315. Vehicle steering mechanism MASSEY - HARRIS - FERGUSON (SALES), Ltd. Dec. 2, 1953 [Dec. 2, 1952], No. 30503/52. Class 80 (1). A steering mechanism for vehicles, particularly tractors, comprises a screw shaft 1, operated by the steering wheel A, co-operating with a nut member 4 through balls 5 working in helical grooves in the two members and a transfer tube 6. The nut 4 is prevented from rotating by a projection 7 thereon engaging between guides 8 of the gear casing and transmits movements in opposite directions of rotation to two transverse shafts 12, which carry the steering arms 13, through oppositely arranged cranks 11 on the shafts 12 and connecting rods 10 coupled to trunnions 9 on the nut. This arrangement allows of splaying forces on the wheels to be balanced out by the linkwork and not transmitted through the screw and nut mechanism. Specification 541,220 is referred to.
