Abstract

976,661. Toothed gearing. CAM GEARS Ltd. April 5, 1961 [March 2, 1960], No. 7407/60. Heading F2Q. In a rack-and-pinion steering mechanism for vehicles the rack 6 is formed with flat or curved sliding surfaces 6a which co-operate with correspondingly shaped surfaces of a spring-pressed thrust pad 7 which urges the rack into mesh with a pinion 2. As shown, the spring pressure on the pad 7 may be adjusted by inserting shims 10 between a cap 9 and housing 5. The spring, Figs. 2 and 4 Provisional (not shown), may be replaced by belleville washers positioned between the pad and an adjusting screw in the cap, or may be replaced by a rubber block. In the Figure Complete (not shown) the sliding surfaces on the rack are in the form of a V-groove and the pad has a complementary V-shaped projection.
