Abstract

1468183 Toothed gearing BURMAN & SONS Ltd 23 Sept 1974 [10 Nov 1973] 52307/73 Heading F2Q In a vehicle rack and pinion steering gear assembly, mounted in a housing 13 also containing a pressure pad 17 which engages the rack 10 and urges it towards the pinion 11, the housing 13 is provided with a cap 19 enclosing the pressure pad 17 and its spring 18, and with a cap 16 enclosing the pinion shaft bearing 15, one or both of these caps being sealingly secured to the housing by means of a settable material which is injected whilst fluid into aligned grooves cut partly into each cap and partly into the corresponding housing bore surface, thereby forming a solid ring 20 of the material when set, which connects the cap to the housing. The grooves may be so located that an external force must be applied to each cap to bring the grooves into alignment prior to injection of the settable fluid material, with the effect of establishing a compressive pre-load in the spring 18, and of pre-loading the bearing assembly 15. The settable material may be a synthetic resin.
