Abstract

1355811 Power-assisted steering mechanism BURMAN & SONS Ltd 4 Jan 1972 [16 Jan 1971] 2211/71 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] In a vehicle steering gear comprising a toothed rack 10 and tapered pinion 12, the rack is connected intermediate its ends to tie rods 20 and means are provided to prevent angular movement of the rack about its longitudinal axis. As shown in Fig. 2, a spring-pressed cupshaped member 22 has a peg portion 23 which engages a groove 26 in a rack 10. In a modification, a spring-pressed cup-shaped element 27, Fig. 3, has a flat lower surface 28 which engages a flattened portion 31 of a rack 10. Two such cup-shaped members 22 or 27 may be provided. Alternatively, angular movement of the rack may be prevented by having teeth 32, 33, Fig. 4, of substantial length and depth. Power assistance may be provided, the housing being closed at each end by a member 13 having a port 15 and the rack having end seals 14.
