In a motor vehicle having a steering column comprising angled sections 2, 3, 4 connected by universal joints 5, 6, there is provided powerassisted rack and pinion steering mechanism comprising a rack 7, a pinion 8, a power cylinder 9 and a control valve 10 mounted separately from the rack 7 and power cylinder 9 and associated with the steering column section 2 or 3.
