Abstract

In power-assisted rack and pinion steering mechanism, a pair of pistons 15, 16 carried by the rack 10 or an extension thereof are slidable in a cylinder 12 having an internal partition 14 through which the rack 10 extends and on opposite sides of which the pistons 15, 16 are disposed, the cylinder 12 having a pair of ports 17, 18 on respective opposite sides of the partition 14 so that pressurized fluid can flow into the cylinder 12 on one side of the partition 14 as fluid flows out of the cylinder 12 on the other side of the partition 14. Part of the cylinder 12 is integral with a housing 13 for the pinion 11. The ends of the rack 10 are connected to respective tie rods 19, 20 and surrounded by flexible bellows 21, 22.
