985,230. Power assisted steering of vehicles. BURMAN & SONS Ltd., and W. H. BRIGGS. Dec. 13, 1963 [Dec. 17, 1962], No. 47441/62. Heading B7H. A valve for use in a vehicle power steering system comprises a sleeve member 12 having two pairs of ports 14, 14 and 15, 15 the ports of each pair being connected respectively to the opposite sides of the power-assist piston 10, aid a rotary member 13 within the sleeve having a central bore 19 connected to a pressure fluid inlet and a pair of peripheral slots 21 connected to the fluid reservoir. Grooves 16, 16 and 17, 17 are formed on the member 13 leaving lands 18, and the grooves 16, 16 are connected by a diametral bore 20. The land 18 may be of constant width and the grooves 16, 17 formed with grooves 23 at the mid point, or may be of width tapering to a minimum at its mid length, whereby, in a central position, fluid from the bore 19 flows around the grooves 16, 17 and through slots 21 to reservoir. Displaced from this position, fluid from bores 19 and 20 is directed to one or other of the slot pairs 14 or 15 and the other opened to reservoir.
