Abstract
819,659. Vehicle power steering. REIS, S. June 11, 1956 [June 10, 1955], No. 18033/56. Class 79(5) In a power assisted steering mechanism having the rod 5 of a double acting piston 2 connected to the steerable wheels (not shown) and to a valve external to the cylinder 1 housing the piston 2, pressure fluid is supplied by a pump 6 directly to the smaller face of the piston and to the valve which selectively directs the fluid the the larger face of the piston 2 to move it, back to the pump 6 whereby the piston 2 is moved by the pressure on the smaller face, or both to the pump 6 and the larger side whereby the piston 2 is not moved. As shown, the piston 2 divides the cylinder 1 into compartments 3, 4, the cross sectional area of the rod 5 being half that of the cylinder 1 and the compartment 3 being connected by pipes 8, 7 to the output of the pump. The compartment 4 is connected by a pipe 22 to a port 21 in a valve body 11 also having a port 18 connected by a pipe 19 to a sump 40 connected to the pump inlet. The valve body 11 also has a port 10 connected by pipes 9, 7 to the pump output. A bore 12 in the body 11 houses a valve element 14, the body 11 being connected to the vehicle steering means (not shown) and the element 14 to the rod 5. The element 14 has a groove 15 and the body 11 a groove 20, whereby movement of the element 14 relative to the body 11 to the right or left of the position shown causes the end 16 of the element 14 to co-operate with the bore 12 to prevent fluid flow in the bore 12 either between the port 10 and the ports 18, 21 or between the port 18 and the port 21, thus pressurizing the compartment 3 or the compartment 4. In order to provide the driver with "feel", a pipe 36 connects the pump output to a port 34 leading to a compartment 35 housing a reduced portion 23 of the element 14. The portion 23 carries between a shoulder 24 and a stop 25 a washer 26, a spring 27 and a sleeve 28, the washer 26 and sleeve 28 co-operating with shoulders 31, 32 on an extension 30 of the body 11. The washer 26 has an aperture 29 connecting the compartment 35 with a chamber 33. In a modified valve construction, Fig. 2 (not shown), the port 21 is provided in a reduced portion of the bore 12, the valve operating in a similar manner.
