Abstract

704,058. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 17, 1952 [Nov. 30, 1951], No. 28898/52. Class 135 Power steering mechanism for road vehicles comprises a manuallyoperable steering shaft 11 operating a valve 30 controlling a servomotor 20, said valve in its neutral position having pressure ports 58, 58a connecting with pressure fluid inlet 50 and spill ports 59, 59a, connecting with exhaust outlets 51, 51a, the spill ports being larger than the pressure ports. The shaft has a threaded end 12 engaging a nut 13 and is capable of limited axial movement. The nut has rack teeth 140 engaging a quadrant 15 on a shaft 16 connected by arm 17 to the steerable wheels. Piston 21 of motor 20 drives a rack 19 also engaging quadrant 15. The valve comprises a sleeve 41 fixed between bearings 40 on shaft 11, and is slidable in a housing 31 provided with the inlet 50, motor ports 52, 52a and outlets 51, 51a. The sleeve is centred in the housing by two or more pairs of spring- pressed plungers 34, the space between each pair being open to the inlet port, whereby inlet pressure also centres the sleeve, and the force due to the pressure and the springs must be overcome before axial movement of the shaft occurs. When the sleeve moves, e.g. to the right, its central land 56 closes pressure port 58a and increases the opening of port 58 and increases and decreases the openings of ports 59a, 59 respectively. Thus, application of pressure fluid through ports 58, 52 to the motor is cushioned by leakage through the open port 59. Further movement of the sleeve to the right further decreases opening of port 59 until finally when it is closed full power is provided. Movement of piston 21 causes recentring of the sleeve by axially moving the nut and shaft. If the power fails, manual steering occurs by engagement of bearing washers 37 with walls 47 in the valve housing, which walls limit the axial movement of the shaft, and a ball check valve 60 opens to prevent a fluid lock.
