1,105,981. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. CAM GEARS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. 19 Oct., 1966 [13 Oct., 1965], No. 43497/65. Heading B7H. An hydraulic power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering gear has a rack 1 with a toothed end 1a resiliently urged into engagement with a pinion 12 by a damper pad 13 and a non-toothed end extending loosely through a piston sleeve 20 to which it is rockably connected at a location remote from the pinion 12, the piston sleeve 20 being slidable within a power cylinder 15, which is located within the steering gear casing, and having a piston 25 therearound which subdivides the annular space between the cylinder 15 and the sleeve 20 into two opposed hydraulic power chambers, whereby hydraulic assistance is transmitted to the rack through the sleeve 20. The power cylinder 15 is supplied with hydraulic fluid through lines 30 from a constant delivery pump. The connection between the piston sleeve 20 and rack may be a ball joint with a part-spherical member 21 on the rack end mounted between seats 22 on the end of the sleeve or a flexible bush (24) (Fig. 2, not shown) between the ends of the rack and piston sleeve.
