Abstract
1,100,059. Power assisted steering. BURMAN & SONS Ltd. 20 July, 1966 [16 Aug., 1965], No. 34975/65. Heading B7H. In an hydraulic power-assisted rack-andpinion steering mechanism the rack-and-pinion are provided with helical teeth and the pinion (together with the driver operated shaft 12) is permitted limited axial movement, due to its reaction with the rack, so to operate the control valve for the hydraulic cylinder. The valve comprises a sleeve 13 located at the end of the pinion (10) by means of a ball race (16) and a member (14), the sleeve having a recess 18 cooperating with a pair of recesses (24) and (25) in the housing, with which are associated ports (22) and (23) leading to opposite sides of the power cylinder. Pressurized fluid is fed into the groove (18) through an inlet (19) and is directed by the valve into the appropriate port (22) or or (23) by axial movement of the pinion, and in the neutral position flows around the ends of the sleeve into the pinion housing from which it is exhausted to a reservoir. The valve may be centred by spring washers (26) or by a ball urged against a cam surface on the outer face of the sleeve 13, by hydraulic or spring pressure.
