983,731. Reciprocating pumps. MILTON RAY CO. April 8, 1963 [April 27, 1962], No. 13833/63. Heading F1A. In an hydraulically actuated diaphragm pump comprising a diaphragm 13, Fig. 2, e.g. of P.T.F.E. or stainless steel, reciprocated by a piston 30 acting through a liquid column, the effective stroke of piston 30 is adjusted by axially adjusting a ported sleeve 54 of a by-pass valve 68 actuated through a lost-motion connection by piston 30 to connect the liquid column to a reservoir 45 during the return stroke. The lost-motion connection comprises a groove 68a in valve 68 of greater width than the forked end of an arm 69 engaging therein, the lost motion resulting in the effective working stroke of piston 30 being less than its effective return stroke, so that diaphragm 13 always engages wall 18a on its return stroke and leakage is made up. Valve member 68 controls ports 62 in sleeve 54 communicating between reservoir 45 and diaphragm-actuating-chamber 12. Axial adjustment of sleeve 54 is effected by rotation of threaded collar 58. Piston 30 is reciprocated by an electric motor 35 acting through worm gear 38, 40 and eccentric 42. Trapped air is vented through a passage in plug 49.
