Abstract

1324322 Toothed gearing CAM GEARS Ltd 4 Jan 1972 [20 Jan 1971] 2778/71 Heading F2Q In a rack-and-pinion steering gear, a rack bar 5 is urged into engagement with a pinion 7 by a spring-pressed yoke means 8 consisting of two metal parts 14, 15, the arrangement being such that under the influence of a spring 13, the parts 14, 15 engage the curved back of the rack bar and are also forced into close contact with the walls 9 of a yoke housing, thereby preventing rattling. In a modification, the yoke member 8 is of plastics material and comprises two separable parts 18, 19 interconnected by a pair of diametrically opposed bridging portions 20. In another modification, the radius of curvature R 1 of the ends of the yoke members 14, 15 is greater than the radius of curvature R 2 of the rack bar. Further modified forms of yoke and rack contacting surfaces are shown in Figs. 4 and 5. (For Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 see next page.)
