Abstract

[Also in Division B7] In a rack-and-pinion steering gear, the rack bar is supported to slide at one end in a housing tube and at the other end in a component which is disposed in the housing of the steering gear and is movable to maintain the rack teeth in mesh with the pinion teeth, the slidable mounting of the rack bar in the housing tube being such as to permit the rack bar limited pivoted movement about the mounting and the rack bar being arranged for connection to the steering transmission through a slot in the housing tube. A rack bar 1 having an extension 5 slides in tube 4 and meshes with a pinion 2 which pinion turns in housing 3 and is fast with a spindle 2a connected to the steering column (not shown). The rack slides on a slipper 7 which is urged by spring discs 8 to maintain the teeth of the rack and pinion in mesh with one another. Outward displacement of slipper 7 is limited by a adjusting bolt 10. Extension 5 is fitted with a runner formed by two segments 6a, 6b held in sliding engagement with tube 4 by a resilient ring 11. Extending through a longitudinal slot 16 in tube 4 are pins 14, 15 secured to extension 5 and having rubber mountings 17 about which the transmission rods 12, 13 are mounted. The outer ends of pins 14, 15 are connected by a plate 18. A plug 21 is provided at the outer end of tube 4 so that lubricant may be admitted into the tube. Bellows 22 and a muff 23 prevent loss of lubricant from the mechanism. In order to resist a turning movement of the rack which may be induced by the reaction of the road wheels through rods 12, 13, the rack is formed with sloping sides 1a 1b and the slipper 7 is correspondingly formed. In an alternative embodiment, the transmission rods are connected directly to the pins which are secured to the extension of the rack bar by axially spaced ball-and-socket joints.
