Abstract

599,410. Hinges &c. BURGESS, P., and ATKINSON LORRIES (1933). Ltd. Oct. 11, 1945, No. 26573. [Class 65 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXII] A ball-and-socket joint connection for the end of a laminated spring (see Group XXXII) to a beam pivotally mounted on the chassis frame comprises a ball member 11 having a shouldered shank 10 clamped between split portions of the end of the beam 6. The socket is formed on a spring shackle member 15 by a hemispherically-recessed portion 18 to which is clamped a ring 19 having a complementary spherical inner surface 20. A lubricant reservoir is formed by an axial bore 24 in the ball member 11 from which lead radial oil ways 26, a constriction at its lower end leading to a superficial recess 30. The latter maintains communication with a passage 27 in the member 15 associated with a replenishing nipple 28. A spring 31 is located in the bore 24 between a vented plug 32 and a piston 33. A passage 34 allows escape of air when the bore 24 is being recharged with lubricant. The ring 19 is provided. with a seal 22 (see Group XXVI) to prevent escape of oil and to keep out dirt.
