Abstract

773,158. Fiuid-pressure brakes. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd. Jan. 10, 1956 [Jan. 13, 1955], No. 1027/55. Class 103 (1). In a fluid-presscwe brake system for motor vehicles variations of loading of the vehicle cause compression of air springs or bellows 1 between an air tank or beam 3 and an axle member 2 so that a control arm 5 is moved to cause, through a shaft 7, tilting of follower member 8. This results in an opening or closure of valve members 18 to allow supply through conduit 24, or exhaust through port 25, of air to pipe 26 which may lead directly or through a reservoir 27, Fig. 2, to the brake control valve 28 of a pneumatic servo-unit for hydraulic brakes. The ends of follower member 8 are linked to pistons 12 displacement of which forces liquid past an adjustable restricted orifice 14, thus damping the movement of the pistons. Increase of pressure in pipe 26, in addition to increasing the brake pressure, also acts in beam 3 and bellows member 1 to lift the chassis of the vehicle. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a spring-loaded selflapping valve having a control arm 35 connected by a link 36 to an unsprung vehicle part acts directly between a reservoir 39 and a metering control valve 41.
