Abstract
608,344. Variable-speed friction gearing. SCHMIDT, L. W. Feb. 20, 1946, No. 5336. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed friction gear comprises friction cones 36, 37 mounted on shafts 32, 33 and engaging friction rings 38, 39 respectively. Ring 38 is mounted in a holder-bush 40 which has an internal coarse screw thread, engaging a corresponding screw thread on the outside of a holder-bush 41 which carries the friction ring 39. Between the holder-bushes 40, 41, is a spring 42 in a recess in bush 41. The member 40 is slidably mounted within a supporting bush 43 rotatably mounted in a ring 45. The latter is pivoted at the centre 48 of the curves of contact of the friction elements 36 ... 39. The gearing ratio is varied by pivoting the holder 45 about the axis 48 by a lever 46. During drive, contact of the friction surfaces is ensured by the spring 42 and the unscrewing action which takes place between the holderbushes 40, 41.
